Hurricane preparedness is essential. Even if you don’t live by the beach, an approaching hurricane can lead to evacuation orders. Early storm prep can help ensure your family stays safe during a storm.

Not sure how to prepare for a hurricane? The experts at Kohler Home Energy are here to help you create an effective hurricane evacuation plan. Continue reading for more information.

Understanding hurricane evacuation zones

Many coastal regions have established evacuation zones to simplify the evacuation process. The National Hurricane Center ranks evacuation zones by severity with Zone A being the most likely to evacuate first and Zone F last.

Not all cities are in a designated zone, but local authorities may order an evacuation anyway. Keep a close eye on local alerts as the storm develops to determine if and when you should leave.

Where should I evacuate?

Once you decide to leave home (or you’re ordered to by local officials), you have options of where to ride out the storm safely. You can stay with family or friends who live outside the hurricane’s path, at a hotel or at an emergency storm shelter. Inform your emergency contacts where you’re going so they know you’re safe.

No matter where you go, make sure there are accommodations for your pets, too. Leaving them behind during natural disasters is a crime in many areas. Some emergency shelters don’t allow pets, so check beforehand if they’re permitted. If you plan to keep your pets with you during the storm, make sure you have extra food, water and additional supplies on hand.

What routes should I take during my evacuation?

Pick the roads that will get you to safety the fastest as your primary route. Be ready for heavy traffic, flooding, downed trees and power lines, and washed-out bridges. These issues may force you to change your evacuation route. Be aware that storm surges may affect your route, so it's wise to have at least three backup options prepared.

Gas stations during evacuations usually have long lines and often run out of fuel, so make sure your car is filled up before you begin traveling. As an extra precaution, keep a gas can on hand.

What do I need to bring?

Make a checklist of everything you need to live away from home for a few days, and begin packing a bag with these necessities. Whether you evacuate or not, you should always have a fully stocked emergency kit at your house. Here’s a checklist for what you should consider packing in your bags:

What do I need in my emergency kit?

  • Flashlight

  • Batteries

  • Fully-stocked first aid kit

  • Medications

  • Plenty of bottled water

  • Non-perishable food

  • Whistle to signal for help

  • List of emergency contacts

  • Important documents (insurance, government, medical, banking, identification, etc.)

  • Personal hygiene items

As you gather these items, check them off your list so you know you have everything you need. Being prepared is essential for hurricane prep.
